Message from Head of Department (HOD)

Ever since the Department of Polymer, Textile and Industrial Engineering started its journey many years back, it has been simultaneously and successfully performing multiple roles of creating new knowledge, and producing an intelligent human resource pool contributing in various domains of the society and the economy at large. The Department has always been on a high growth path with a strong commitment to fostering engineering education studies. The periodically curriculum reviews imparts technical engineering knowledge to the students and the application based environment paired with the state of the art laboratories complements the same. The students and staff are motivated to participate in research and innovations, paper presentations, workshops, seminars, and outreaches that are essential to maintaining proficiency. Cultural activities are also promoted through various clubs at the departmental and university levels. Due to a strong positive reputation of the department, a number of companies like Kira Motors, Fine spinners ltd, Roofings, Nyanza Textiles ltd, Luuka Plastics, UIRI, UNBS and many more have shown interest in recruiting our graduates over the years. A large percentage of our students also qualify to pursue higher studies abroad, particularly in East African region, UK, USA, China, Germany, among others. Otherwise, in case of any inquiries after vising our website which provides more details on various activities, please feel free to contact us on email addresses provided on faculty pages.

Department's Vision

A center of excellence in mechanical, textiles, and materials engineering

Department's Mission

To produce skilled mechanical, textile & materials engineers for research, innovation, outreach and industrialization

Departmental Overview
The Department started in 2009 with funding from MSI project (World Bank financed) in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology with a focus on training Materials, Mechanical and Textile Engineers, Industrial Supervisors, Technicians and hands-on craftsmen on short courses among others. At that time, the department was under the name, ‘Textile Engineering Department (TEX)’. But after reviewing its programmes for accreditation at National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in 2018, the department name was revised as well to ‘Polymer, Textile and Industrial engineering Department (PTI), in a bid to effectively contribute to the National Textile Policy, NDP III-IV and Vision 2040. The Department runs various programmes in Materials, Mechanical, Polymer and Textiles, Ginning and short courses under vocation training (TVET). Has had over twelve and twenty four cycles of successful graduation both on degree and diploma levels resp. Then four cycles for masters and soon for PhD level. The research focus is on using innovative scientific/engineering techniques and sustainable materials for better quality products that are in line with industry needs and community consumption. This research focus is further facilitated by the state of art testing equipment and mechanical workshop all available at the Department laboratories and workshops respectively. More so, the department has managed to run a number of EU grants won by her senior staff members and carries out outreach programmes as a way of reaching out to the community and show casing our innovations for community problems solving.
