Message from Head of Department (HOD)

Welcome to the Department of Mining Engineering at Busitema University.

As we move toward a future driven by industrialization and sustainable development, the role of the Mining Engineer has never been more critical. Our department is committed to providing a transformative STEM-based education that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and the practical skills required by the modern mineral sector.

Our curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering is designed to equip you with expertise across the entire mining life cycle from exploration and mine design to sustainable mineral processing and mine closure. We place a strong emphasis on innovation and safety, encouraging our students to develop home-grown solutions for artisanal miners and large-scale industrial operations alike.

At Busitema, we don’t just train employees; we nurture job creators and innovators ready to lead Uganda’s mineral wealth into a sustainable and prosperous future. I invite you to join us at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and pursue excellence in this rewarding field.

Departmental Overview
The department focuses on the application of science and technology for mineral extraction. Research and student projects often cover:
Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM): Developing tools like sample splitters, sluice boxes, and crushers.
Mine Safety and Operations: Researching underground communication systems, dust suppression, and ventilation.
Mineral Processing: Innovations in gold amalgamation and thermal regeneration kilns for local miners.
